Simple Food Photography Tips For Fast Casual Restaurants

Easy styling tricks for pizza, pasta, and burgers that elevate your feed

Not every restaurant has a pro photographer on staff, but that doesn’t mean your food photos need to fall flat. Whether you’re working with a smartphone, a DSLR, or snapping content between services, there are a few go-to tricks we use at EatDrink Creative Agency to capture drool-worthy shots of popular dishes like pizza, pasta, and burgers.

Here are three quick styling and shooting tips you can use to make your menu stand out online.

1. For Pizza: Show the Pull, Not the Pie

A full overhead shot of a pizza might work for a menu photo, but on social it gets scrolled past quickly. Instead, go in for the moment. Try:

  • A single slice being pulled away from the pie

  • Extra melted cheese stretching mid-lift

  • Natural hand shots from the guest’s point of view

  • Tilting the pie slightly for depth and light bounce

Use a clean background and make sure the table surface doesn’t distract from the texture of the crust or toppings.

2. For Pasta: Go for the Twirl or the Toss

Pasta is all about movement and comfort. The best shots capture the sauciness, the swirl, or the steam.

Try these ideas:

  • Twirl a fork into the pasta and hold it mid-air

  • Toss the noodles lightly before shooting to loosen the texture

  • Shoot at a 45-degree angle to capture both depth and color

  • Use natural lighting for golden tones and shadows

Skip the flat lay here. Pasta always looks better with some dimension and visual weight.

3. For Burgers: Build the Stack and Show the Layers

Burgers are visual powerhouses when styled right. The goal is to show off what’s inside without making it look messy.

Here’s how:

  • Stack with intent: protein, toppings, lettuce, bun

  • Use parchment paper or a burger sleeve to frame the base

  • Keep the lighting side-focused to highlight texture

  • Capture the drips, the melty cheese, or the sheen on the bun

Avoid placing the burger directly on a white plate unless the table has contrast. Use butcher paper, wood trays, or colored napkins to help the burger stand out.

Make Simple Food Look Scroll-Stopping

Even the most casual dishes can feel elevated with the right angle, lighting, and styling. If your feed needs a little boost or you’re capturing content in between pro shoots, start with these three crowd-pleasing dishes.
